Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a fantastic city with a privileged location on the Atlantic Ocean. The city has just over half a million. citizens. Lisbon is one of Europe's oldest cities, with a history that goes back to ancient times.
The city has undergone great development in recent years, with many new hotels and an improvement in the city's infrastructure. At the same time, however, it has retained its charm and a trip to the historic districts of Alfama, Bairro Alta, Baixa and Belem is like a time travel back in time.
In the Belem district you will find the fantastic Jeronimus Monastery and the Belém Tower (both on the UNESCO World Heritage List). The monastery was built to mark Vasco da Gama's voyages to India. The Portuguese explorer is today buried in the monastery - although it was not until 1898 that his mortal remains were moved there.
From Lisbon it is only a 30 minute drive to the beautiful beach town of Cascais. The UNESCO town of Sintra, which offers both castles and a national park, is also less than an hour's drive from Lisbon. A trip to Cascais and Sintra can possibly combined with a wine visit in the area.
